Trail Creek Road leaves Ketchum and winds up over Trail Creek Summit toward Challis, following Summit Creek for several miles. In July 2026 I drove early in the morning over Trail Creek Summit and to the Kane Lake trailhead for a day hike. I had researched the trail using the All-Trails app and knew that the road into the trailhead was a bit sketchy. There had been thunderstorms and rain the night before, and the road was muddy and rough, but this is the reason that I got a 4-wheel drive pickup this year! I enjoyed capturing images of the area all the way to the trailhead, and the trail itself was one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. Wildflowers were in full bloom, Kane Creek had phenomenal waterfalls and cascades all along the trail, and the Lake itself was beyond words! When I reached the lake, I found several meadows absolutely filled with wildflowers! In this image I got down at the level of the flowers, using them as foreground, with the forest pines in the mid-ground and mountains for a backdrop. Some ominous clouds were rolling in, subduing the bright sun on the mountains, but bringing out the bright colors in the wildflowers. The conditions were perfect!
