On September 11th each year, a special volunteer committee with the assistance of the Twin Falls Police and Fire Departments hold a commemorative event and display an enormous US flag in front of the Perrine Bridge. The flag has been named “The Patriot.” It weighs 400 pounds and is large enough to cover the local high school gymnasium floor. For America’s 250th birthday in July 2026, the 9/11 memorial committee arranged to display the flag for two weeks, including over the Independence Day weekend. I spent many mornings and evenings taking photos of the flag from many different locations and perspectives during those two weeks. At the last part of June, I drove out to the north end of the canyon and followed some of the dirt roads along the north side of the canyon to a viewpoint along the canyon rim. I climbed up a butte along the edge where I could get a spectacular view of the Perrine Bridge with the flag, with desert sagebrush in the foreground, and the setting sun in the background. I took a lot of images from different perspectives that evening, but this one garnered the most reactions on Facebook within just a few hours after posting. I love Twin Falls’ patriotism!
