The South Hills region of the Sawtooth National Forest is a popular area for hiking, trail riding, hunting, and camping. In a little over an hour’s drive south of Twin Falls, one can reach the Magic Mountain ski area, where there are nearby roads and trails that lead to fantastic views of golden Aspens and autumn colors. I spent a Saturday morning the first weekend in October driving up some of these roads and finding all sorts of magnificent fall colors. After a fantastic sunrise spent with a cow moose only about 50 feet away, I began driving back down as the sun came up, keeping the sun below the tops of the trees as long as I could. I glanced over at a partial side road that ended after a few hundred feet, where several Aspens were glowing red and gold. I was so excited by the view that I didn’t even shut off the truck…I just grabbed my camera and trekked through the brush to try to capture the sun through the autumn-colored branches before it rose too high. In this image, the sun lit up several patches of color even deep into the cluster of trees, creating a fantastic array of gold and red.
