I have been fascinated with Cauldron Linn since I first explored it. The Snake River here is forced into a very narrow passage through the rock, forming waterfalls and unique shapes in the basalt. I enjoy scrambling down the cliff sides to get to the river edge, and following it as close as possible to the falls. One late July night I was having trouble sleeping so I drove out to Cauldron Linn to do some night photography. As it started to get light, I scrambled down the canyon wall to the river below and then made my way along the rocky shore toward the falls. At one point, it looked like I could pretty easily hop across rocks to get to the other side of the river, so I did, and then worked my way along the rocks to get close to the falls. After taking several shots of the falls, I followed the river up above the falls, where there were some magnificent little rapids and falls around basalt rock formations. The sun was just cresting the horizon, and I shot several photos with a slow exposure and closed down aperture. I like the sun star with the small aperture, as well as the smooth water rushing over the rocks.
