Each year since my family has lived in Twin Falls, the College of Southern Idaho Agriculture department has planted a field of sunflowers that they invite the community to visit and enjoy. In 2026 during late July and August there was a record number of wildfires in the west, making the air quality terrible, and resulting in many red sunsets and sunrises. As the summer came to an end and in the last week before the beginning of the school year, I completed a longer backpacking trip and some community market shows. Although exhausted, I wanted to make a few more photo excursions before getting back to school, so on an evening with an unusual earie looking atmosphere I drove to the CSI sunflower field to see what I could get. The sunflowers were not yet at their full height, so I had to carefully compose my shots to avoid getting power lines and business lights in the background. I did want to include the red setting sun; however, it was still so bright that it didn’t appear red in images. There were a few images that I quite liked, and this is one of my favorites from that evening.
