The City of Rocks National Reserve near Almo on the southern border of Idaho is a popular area for rock climbing as well as hiking and sight-seeing. The massive granite formations are beautiful, and much larger than they appear from a distance! It is hot and dry during the summer months, but on this early May morning the air was cool and comfortable. I hiked before dawn along one of the reserve’s popular trails, and as the sun began to rise, I left the trail and scrambled around on some of the rock formations looking for just the right view. As the sun crested the rock pinnacles I snapped this image, capturing the scrubby trees in the foreground, and the sun-star peering over the granite formations in the distance. I loved seeing how the trees grew in these harsh conditions on the granite, and their resilience was inspiring.
