On an early September evening, I took a drive toward Buhl Idaho to see some of the old barns in the area and the rural farmland at harvest time. Much of the wheat had already been harvested, although the corn was still tall and green. Near the old Rudolf Kunze barn, built in the early 1900s, I found an irrigation pond and ditches beside the roadway that were surrounded by wild sunflowers and other beautiful grasses and flowers. The sun, as it was setting behind the tops of the rows of field corn, caught the wild sunflowers along the fence line and ditch bank, creating a soft glow around the blades of grass and flowers. The clouds reflected perfectly in the water, making the pond surface into a mirror of the grass, flowers and sky. I normally think that using an irrigation ditch as the subject of a photo would be less than thrilling, but the grasses, flowers, sunlight, and reflections made this scene something special.
