One popular attraction in southern Idaho near Twin Falls is Pillar Falls. It is most recognizable by large rhyolite stone pillars across the width of the river, but besides the large pillars, there are various levels of rock, and several cascading layers of waterfalls. The trail down to Pillar Falls begins on private property, although it is open to the public. It is a steep trail that has been roughly paved for much of the way. The hike itself is only about a mile long, but it winds down from the canyon rim to the river, dropping 550 feet in elevation, and is generally considered a challenging hike. Along the way, there are several good views of the Perrine Bridge to the west. On the July evening that I took this image I had seen clouds forming around sunset time, and since I had never hiked this trail at sunset, I set out about 8:00pm with my camera to do so. I spent a couple of hours down at the falls and then headed back up. At about 10:00pm I reached this point and set up my equipment for some photos. The white tufted flowers on the vines at the side of the trail made a perfect foreground element, and the s-curve of the Snake River led right to the Perrine Bridge under the sunset backdrop.
