The magnificent Sawtooth Mountains in central Idaho are popular for photography, as well as hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities. The Alice-Toxaway Loop is one of the most popular hikes in the Stanley area, beginning at the Tin Cup Trailhead and passing Farley, Toxaway, Twin, and Alice Lakes along the way. I backpacked the loop the last week of July 2026, taking 2 nights and 3 days. My wanderings to photograph waterfalls, creeks, lakes, and wildflowers made the 19-mile hike into a little over 33 miles! I stayed at the base of the highest portion of the loop trail the first night, on the bank of an unnamed lake. There are 3 lakes here in a chain, each a little smaller than the previous one, and the last being more like a pond. As the sun got lower that evening, the clouds moved along with it, and would cover it from time to time, leaving a golden glow on the landscape. I followed the creek from lake to lake, taking photos in the magnificent golden light. When I arrived at the last one, the water was smooth as glass, reflecting the rocks, trees, and mountains clearly, while one could still see the rocky bottom.
