The magnificent Sawtooth Mountains in central Idaho are popular for photography, as well as hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities. The Alice-Toxaway Loop is one of the most popular hikes in the Stanley area, beginning at the Tin Cup Trailhead and passing Farley, Toxaway, Twin, and Alice Lakes along the way. I backpacked the loop the last week of July 2026, hiking 13 miles the first day, so that I could be at the base of the steepest climb in the morning. Where I camped for the first night, there were three unnamed lakes with a creek connecting each. I camped the first night at this, the second of the three. The lake caught my attention when I hiked this loop a few years ago, because of its turquoise color. As evening came on, I circled the lake a couple of times looking for reflections and compositions that I liked. As I’m finding is typical, there wasn’t much color in the sky to the west where the sun was setting, but the sky opposite had beautiful color. This view is from the west end of the lake where the reflections were strong and the clouds a bright orange in the east sky.
