Malad Gorge is one of five sections of Thousand Springs State Park, and the closest to Interstate 84. In fact, the freeway crosses right over the gorge near Hagerman, Idaho. The first time that I visited Malad Gorge was during the winter break from the school year. I visited each of the five sections of the park, spending most of the day shooting winter images. The parking area for Malad Gorge is on the east side, and there is a trail that begins by crossing a bridge over the gorge and then meandering alongside the rim of the canyon. At a few spots along the edge, there are rock outcroppings that offer a nice view of the canyon looking south. This late December morning, there was a little snow remaining from earlier in the week, and at 8:00am, the sun had not yet penetrated the overcast skies. The colors were mostly muted grays, with a few dots of browns and reds of the brush below. There is something rather dreamy and peaceful about the scene, and it gives me a serene feeling each time I look at it.
