Lake Cleveland sits at 8200 feet above sea level near Mount Harrison in the Albion Mountains. It is just a few miles from the Pomerelle Ski Area and is popular in the summer months for camping. Typically, the road is not open until the first week of July due to snow, and once the snow melts off, the wildflowers begin to bloom. The lake is fed by a creek that runs down from the peaks to the west, and the heaviest concentration of flowers is on the hillside along the creek. On July 7, 2026, I made an early morning excursion to see the sunrise and flowers, and I was not disappointed! The snowpack was light this year, so the creek was completely dry already, so I followed it up the hill stopping wherever the angle was right to capture the sun rising over the tree line in the background. In this image I was able to place prominently in the foreground some Indian Paintbrush, as well as Penstemon, and a variety of white flowers, with a backdrop of the rising sun. We had some stormy weather recently, and some of the clouds were dark and ominous, but this made the sunrise much more interesting. This view is a wide angle, making the clouds more prominent.
