The City of Rocks National Reserve near Almo on the southern border of Idaho is a popular area for rock climbing as well as hiking and sight-seeing. The massive granite formations are beautiful, and much larger than they appear from a distance! It is hot and dry during the summer months, but on this early May morning, the air was cool and comfortable. After scrambling around on some of the rock formations earlier in the morning, I decided to hike a boundary trail and see some of the views from a distance. I was glad I made that choice, as I reached a portion of the trail that was covered with blooming Arrowleaf Balsamroot flowers. The sun had been up for an hour or so, but it was just now cresting the peaks from this viewpoint along the trail and casting its rays across the hillsides lighting up the flowers. Most of the morning long, I had been focusing on the rock shapes and grand views of the formations, but my attention turned quickly to the wildflowers as the sun lit them up. Rarely have I seen so many flowers covering an area, and it was magnificent!
