Castle Rocks State Park in Cassia County attracts climbers, hikers, and campers, as well as photographers. In June of 2025 I made a visit to explore the area, arriving just after sunrise. The volcanic rock formations are similar to those in City of Rocks a few miles away, and hiking through the area made me feel quite small in comparison! As I reached some of the largest formations along the trail, the sun was just reaching over the rocks and was bathing the valley in warm golden light. There weren’t many wildflowers, but I was able to include a large sunlit patch of Pinyon Pines in the foreground. I made a loop around the park, taking advantage of the morning sunlight making its way across the landscape, and trying to capture its warm rays wherever I could. This is one of my favorite images because I was able to capture highlights of sunlight across the tops of the massive rock formations.
