One of the most intriguing things to me about Southern Idaho’s landscape is that many of the most beautiful canyons, rivers, waterfalls, and lakes are surrounded by sagebrush, lava rock, and desert! This is generally what people see as they drive through southern Idaho, and what they think of the area! However, even the desert grasses, lichen-covered lava rock, and brush have a certain beauty, and are familiar to a great many people who grew up in the Magic Valley. The sunsets and sunrises stand out to me as one of the most astounding things about the region, and I never tire of chasing these and taking photographs! On the early June morning that I took this image I had determined to explore the north side of the Snake River canyon across from the Twin Falls side. This is sometimes referred to as the Jerome side of the river, and the area along this side of the river is a patchwork of dirt roads that require a 4-wheel-drive vehicle to navigate. I drove some of these roads before daylight so that I could be near the canyon edge for the sunrise, and from the top of a bluff I took several photos of the morning’s fiery sunrise!
