The Paint Mines Interpretive Park near Calhan Colorado is striped with colored bands of clay caused by oxidized iron. It is claimed that Native Americans used these colors to make paint, and the park is named for this. I was able to visit in March 2025 during a visit to Colorado Springs to see our daughter. I rarely get anyone willing to get up a go with me in the wee hours of the morning, so I explored the area myself, arriving before sunrise and hiking by flashlight until sunrise. This image features a hoodoo with a backdrop of sunrise colors. Many areas of the park have fascinating hoodoos as well as stripes of colored clay, and I spent several hours capturing images throughout the park. As the sun rose the sky cleared, and it was quickly too bright to see the contrast in the colors in the clay well. It was beautiful to explore, but I will have to return sometime when it is a little overcast to really capture the beauty of the ribbons of color. However, the pinks of the sunrise sky made this a favorite image of mine from the trip. It didn’t last long as usual, but was magnificent while it lasted!
