Balanced Rock Sunset
Horizontal orientation. Canvas prints are available with optional barnwood or hardwood floating frames hand-crafted by the photographer, making a truly unique and one-of-a-kind piece of art. Please see images for details.
Idaho's Balanced Rock near Castleford is a popular Magic Valley attraction. It is almost 50 feet tall, and balances on a pedestal only 3 feet by 17 inches. The rock and others nearby were carved by winds into their present formations. The area is hot and dry in the summer, with very few flowers or green vegetation, but on the June evening that I took this image, the natural colors of the rock and lichens lit by the golden sunset light were brilliant enough to make it a beautiful sight. I explored the area for quite a while looking at different angles and perspectives, and when I rounded the rocks in the foreground, this view caught my attention. It almost seemed as though the balanced rock was framed in the center of an old scales/weight balance, with the solid rocks on each side balancing each other out. I loved the perspective and colors, and this image is one of my favorite I have ever taken of this rock.
