Idaho's Balanced Rock near Castleford is a popular Magic Valley attraction. It is almost 50 feet tall, and balances on a pedestal only 3 feet by 17 inches. The rock and others nearby were carved by wind into their present formations. The area is hot and dry in the summer, with very few flowers or green vegetation, but on the June evening that I took this image, the natural colors of the rock and sagebrush lit by the golden sunset light were brilliant enough to make it a beautiful sight. I explored the area for quite a while looking at different angles and perspectives, and when the sun began to set, I looked for an angle where I could catch the sun just going behind the rock as it reached the horizon. The evening was peaceful, but breezy, and the sagebrush in the foreground was constantly moving, so there is some motion blur, with a crisp focus on the solid rock formations. This was one of my favorites from this excursion.
