Alpine Lake and Sawtooth Lake, two extremely popular destinations in the Sawtooth Mountains, are accessed from the Iron Creek Trailhead, West of Stanley. Although my initial plan was to hike to the higher Sawtooth Lake on this mid-June morning, I decided to first take a short detour down into Alpine Lake. What a gorgeous treat! The morning sunlight fell spectacularly on the lake and surroundings. Two backpackers had perched their tent on an outcropping rock, and were relaxing on the sunny rock, finishing their breakfast as I hiked in. The mountain reflection in the lake was incredibly striking, but to get a clear shot of the reflection uninterrupted by logs along the shoreline and the backpacker’s camp, I hiked quite a way around the lake. It was so worth it! Some have told me that Alpine Lake is rarely calm enough to see a reflection, so I consider myself quite lucky to have caught this moment. It certainly helps to get an early start, but it is no guarantee that the wind will be calm. I took a little longer here than intended, and as I soaked in the peace and quiet, I felt a profound sense of gratitude for the beauty and tranquility of this fantastic place.
