"Smoky sunrise over Shoshone Falls" Print
Images include an optional hand-crafted barn wood frame for a 12×18 canvas print.
I had enjoyed exploring and photographing the local Magic Valley area so much in 2023 that I was very much looking forward to the close of the following school year and the chance to get out during the spring and summer. However, the summer of 2024 was particularly bad for wildfires in many western states, and for much of the month of July our skies were so hazy and smoky that it wasn't even very healthy to be outdoors. When I heard that more water was being turned down river and over Shoshone Falls, I determined to get out anyway, and to make a trip to see the falls. I biked the Canyon Rim Trail, which offers several good viewpoints of the falls, and I found a location to capture the sunrise over the falls. As the sun appeared over the canyon rim it was obscured in smoke and appeared red along with the atmosphere around it. The eerie haze and heavy air evoked a feeling of awe, yet there was a certain beauty in the uniqueness of the scenery. Although the wildfires were very destructive, burning much of the area around Stanley, there was at least some uniqueness and beauty to be found, and some of this was captured in this rare image, now permanently recorded.
