Pillar Falls is located along the Snake River just east of Twin Falls. It is most recognizable by the large rhyolite stone pillars across the width of the river, but besides the large pillars, there are various levels of rock, and several cascading layers of waterfalls. During the spring and summer, much of teh rock is covered with water, but when the water levels are low, one can walk out on the rock, completely crossing the river. The rock is formed in such unique shapes that it feels as if one is walking on a different planet when exploring the area. The river splits in numerous directions as it makes its way through the maze of rock, and at one side of the river are the cascading falls seen in this image. After crossing the river, I was able to walk out along the base of some of the pillars, and walk right up to the edge of the water where it was swirling around to find its way further downstream. The sun was casting shades of purples and yellows in the sky, which reflected in the swirling waters, creating an almost copper tone. A slow shutter speed smoothed out the water as it flowed over the rocks, and the resulting image is filled with energy yet conveys smoothness and peace at the same time.
