Shoshone Falls, one of the main attractions in the Magic Valley, is actually quite difficult to photograph well. During the bright sunny day, the glare and harshness of the sunlight doesn’t make a pleasant image, and in the morning when the sun is rising, the light reflects harshly on the mists rising from the base of the falls, blocking the view of the falls. Just a day or two after the water flow was increased for the season, I made a visit to photograph the sunrise. I was lucky enough to find some blooming wild blue flax on the hillside above the falls, but it wasn’t very tall, and the hillside was so steep that not sliding down it was a challenge. I set up my tripod so that the camera sat almost on the ground in front of the flowers, and it stayed firmly enough in place to get this image, even though I had to lie down to keep from sliding down the hill! I was able to combine three exposures to get the extreme contrast in the lighting, but the resulting image was well worth the challenge to capture it! I printed this photo and framed it, and it sold the first day I displayed it. I printed another, and it sold the first day again!
